Kiwi Webquest

Videos:

Watch each of the videos below during your inquiry on the kiwi. Before each video, look at the focus questions and see if you can find out the answers.

Video One: The Kiwi call

In this short video, you can hear the sound a kiwi makes. First listen carefully to the sound in the clip. After you have watched the video, your teacher will play you a range of bird calls from other New Zealand birds from the link below.

Close your eyes and see if you can recognise the kiwi call.

Now read the information on the website below. It describes the difference between the male and female call. Do you think it was a male of female kiwi in the video? Now listen to both calls so that you can hear the difference.

 Video Two:

Do a KWL chart (what we know, what we want to know, what we have learned) about the kiwi egg and hatching.

Read the information from the website below about the kiwi egg to see if you found out anything new. http://www.savethekiwi.org/about-the-bird/kiwi-characteristics/an-enormous-egg.html

In the short video below, you see a kiwi hatching from it's egg. You can look at the link below from the BNZ save the kiwi resource that explains more about the hatching process.

After you have watched the film complete your KWL chart, and write a brief report on the kiwi egg and hatching or describe orally what you have learned to a buddy.

Video Three: Mutant Planet

This video contains a lot of information  about why the kiwi is unique. Below are some focus questions to think about before you watch the video. Can you find the answers?

The video describes the kiwi as being an 'evolutionary oddity'. What do you think this means?

What does the kiwi have that is 'unlike any other bird?'

How does the kiwi find it's prey?

What is another word for a birds feathers? What are kiwi feathers like?

Does a kiwi have wings?

Is a kiwi a mammal? Visit this page from the BNZ website to check your answers after watching the film:

 Video Four: Kiwi Bird Feeding

In this video a kiwi is searching for food. Have a look at it's habitat and where it is searching, then brainstorm a list of foods that may be in the kiwi diet. Check your list against the information in the wesite below. Add anything you missed out to your list.

Why is it in danger?

What can we do to help?

Visit the page below for a full list of predators after watching the film.
